So even thought it won't power up I can plug the hard drive in via firewire ---even without power??--and use it as a remote drive? That would be fantastic!!

While all this was happening, the Apple store here in Bowling Green diagnosed (for $35) the lampshade and determined that the logic board was defunct, and as you probably know replacing it would cost more than the computer was worth. But in case you don't know, it's a fairly easy process to get stuff off the dead lampshade HD and transfer it to the new 'puter. All it takes is a firewire connection. So I keep the lampshade on my desk near the new one, and often discover that I need some file on the lampshade that I had otherwise forgotten about. Just in case you don't know about this. Nolan
