I'm still running 10.4.11 for much the same reasons, Neal, so
understand your position.
I doubt that a dvd would have anywhere near the amount of room you
need, as you'd want to copy the entire system directory and all of
the applications. But you can get a smallish hard drive so cheaply
now, that that may be an option for you. Or, I have a few HDs in the
10 to 20 gig range that are doing nothing right now and would lend
you one if you want to go that way. Also, you can borrow my temp usb
connecter set .... makes big data transfers pretty easy.
I haven't gone to 10.5 because, as I understand it, you lose the
ability to run OS 9, and I'm still using Excel from the Office '98
package. We be anachronisms.
Funny, I use the same VW version ... although they've been trying to
get me to upgrade for several years now. To someone with more work
of that sort, it'd probably be worth the price, but the price is
substantial.
I wonder, could the free packages replace Photoshop for you? I've
gotten comfortable and quite happy with GIMP and Inkscape, although I
understand that PS has functions that are outside of the range of
this pair of aps.
Final word: Re Filemaker 6. It's a good version of a good
application, and if you are just running things that are unlikely to
need updating, it's probably all you need, but what I've read is that
it's a sketchy runner on system 10.5. In fact, my understanding is
that you need at least FMP 8.5 for reliable performance on OS 10.5.
But you're in luck because I use the developer version of FMP 8.5 and
can put together a runtime for you. If it's a simple auto-
translation - and most of those I've done have been - then all it
would cost you is a lunch ... or maybe a beer.
