My wife's relatively new white macbook also has had troubles connecting to the network at home but not at work. In my case it appeared to be a problem of DHCP address conflicts and channel settings on the router. Giving her a fixed IP address seems to have helped, but this is of course not possible with things like coffee shops. Her old G3 Powerbook never had any of these problems...
