Dan,

You can purchase the Airport Express and set it far enough away from the Airport Extreme that it can still find it. Configure the Express as "extending" the range, which will give you considerable more distance.........however doing this cuts the speed in half (according to Apple and I experienced the slowdown personally) for now the packets have to travel from the Extreme to the Express and from the express to your machine. I don't know how all the back and forth checking goes with these things but it really slowed the speed.

When I got away from the older (flying saucer) extreme and went to the newer model I got full bars throughout three floors and the Extreme is located in the furtherest corner of the lower level and even on the top floor in the opposite corner of the house I can still get good signal. The garage I lose connection and I think that is because of the fire rated drywall that is installed in garages for outside I still get the signal.

Does anyone have any experience/advice on boosting the strength of a
wireless router's signal in a home? Our router works fine in most of
the house, but there is one room in the back that we use often where
the signal is very spotty. Is there some "booster" device that I could
locate in or near that room to get better reception?
