I recently got a "teardrop" iMac for my son (thanks again Dan) and I have a question regarding software that can run on it. The iMac's specs are: 500MHz, 384 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, and it is running System 10.3.9.

I tried to install iLife 08 from a disc I have and it spit it right out. I am assuming that is because it didn't meet minimum system requirements (either that or I didn't ask nicely)... Will iLife 06 work? If so, does anyone out there have it for a reasonable price?

Aside from doing school work on the iMac, my son is a young musician and I am eager to have GarageBand up and running for him!

Stuart,

The iMac is likely spitting the disk out because it can't read a DVD. iMacs of that era had various drives in them and not all could read DVDs. You need to get CDs of iLife '08 or install the DVD from an external FIREWIRE dvd drive. Neither is an easy thing to find.

Another option would be to replace the internal CD drive with a compatible "combo" (CD/DVD) drive. Also not an easy thing to find.

I have a few iMacs of that era. I'll check to see what I have that might help you out. (I'm out of town right now.)

The system that you want to put on that is 10.4.11 "Tiger." I have found that it runs the best on that era of G3s. It will also be more compatible with iLife '08. (Again, you will need a set of 4 CDs and not the single disk DVD version.)

You will probably be able to run most of iLife '08 with those specs, but iDVD and iMovieHD will be painful. You might consider iLife '06 for that machine.

Lot's of options. Sorry that none of them are easy. I'll let you know what I can find in my "menagerie of Macs."
