As someone who has owned and used a Kindle for several months, I can
say that there is definitely an opportunity there for Apple. I find
the Kindle's navigation system frustratingly archaic. The device
positively cries out for a touch screen interface. And of course
color. And real web browsing, etc. etc. If Apple could produce
something as elegant and simple to use as the iPhone it could own this
evolving market. I believe the sweet spot on size is approximately
magazine size (roughly 8 x 10), which would allow it to show a large
enough page for the text to be readable, with the ability to display
reasonably sized photos along with the text.
I could also make an argument for a device that would have two 8 x 10
screens so that it would fold to the 8 x 10 size (we're all quite used
to carrying paper tablets or magazines or file folders of that size,
so it wouldn't feel odd), but when fully opened would be capable of
displaying a full magazine-like spread of two pages at a readable
size. In other words, essentially replicate the magazine-reading
experience in a digital reader. I don't know if the economics of that
make sense right now, but I suspect that's where we're eventually
heading.
