I have external hard drives both at home and at work and I want to use both as Time Machine backup drives for my MacBook Pro. It appears that Time Machine will only let me select one disk at a time to use as my backup disk, which means that I will have to set up the other drive in TM's preferences each time I want to use it.

Is that correct, and if so, does anyone know of a way to set up Time Machine so that it will automatically back up to whichever drive is currently available without further setup?

I don't have an answer for that particular issue for you, Dan, but I have made good use of several (at different times) of those little bus- powered USB and/or FW 2.5" drives for my TM drive. They throw into a computer bag and hardly up take any room.

Buffalo makes an inexpensive USB enclosure that they put a variety of mechanisms into that hardly weighs anything and takes up barely more room than the mechanism itself:

Other World Computer makes my favorite Firewire 800 drive enclosure, but it is a little larger and heavier:
