Well, I broke down and called Apple after having tried a few more experiments.
Here is the problem: there is a problem with trying to have both a Guest network and an private network at the same time. [Hmm... thought this was part of the point.] After turning off the Guest network, the private network works just fine.
I was told to expect an update in the future (which is good, because it would be hard to expect an update in the past).
Sad thing is that I managed to buy my Airport Extreme 2 days before the new ones were announced. Rats.
