Harry, I see this all the time when I travel, amazes me how some people leave their computer wide open.
They will be able to see you unless you turn your Airport off. Some hotels don't give you the ethernet option so you have to leave it on. When I travel I turn my File Sharing off so even if they see me they can't get into my files. A good friend was traveling in Israel, with several others on a Holy Land tour. She emailed me from there saying (like you) that she could see several and a friend of hers had a Mac and she could get in and see her hard drive. The next morning Jeni told the lady this and it was disputed, then Jeni ask if she had given her son a Football cake for his birthday. Did the trick. I told her to turn off file sharing and that stopped the problem.
