Does the hard drive mount on the desktop when you plug it in? If it doesn't, no amount of fiddling with iPhoto will recover the photos living on it. If it does not mount, the most likely problem is a damaged directory. First try Disk Utility. If that doesn't help—and it rarely does—you'll have to try a more robust repair program like DiskWarrior or Drive Genius.
