Hard drive does show up on my desktop. But, it has been acting weird lately (my mini too). May be time for a new mini (or a newer used system) after all of this is (hopefully) straitened out!

Does the hard drive mount on the desktop when you plug it in? If it doesn't, no amount of fiddling with iPhoto will recover the photos living on it. If it does not mount, the most likely problem is a damaged directory. First try Disk Utility.
