Anne, I have used nothing but APC units for years and years. Can't begin to recall how many I have had and all but one reconditioned model have worked beautifully. I have never used the software to shut the units down so I can't say how well it works, I would imagine slick other than software that ask if you want to "save" the changes, or Safari that ask if you really want to close all the tabs. Possibly APC writes code to override those questions and shuts it down anyway, I would like to know myself.
One thing. When the unit gets low, really low and it continues to warn you it would be best if you paid attention and replaced it. I didn't and one unit actually began omitting a burning smell, VERY strong so I don't know if I was about to have a meltdown or what. Another time I kept having a fault breaker trip and I could not figure out why. Time and again, finally I replaced the APC unit that had been flashing and omitting their death sound and the tripping of the breaker stopped.
