Any of you using such a system and how does it work?

I've been running all my systems off UPS units for years. For the most part, I've stayed with APC, but also have had good luck with Tripp Lite units. I don’t use the software distributed with the boxes. On Mac OS X, I use the built-in software or open sourced Apcupsd, because I've always found them to be more reliable than APC's Powerchute.

By the way, don’t throw out a failing UPS. It's usually just a bad battery, and they're easily replaceable on most units. Take out your old battery and go to Batteries Plus. They've usually got a replacement and they'll recycle the old one for you. It's much cheaper than buying a whole new unit.

At any rate, don’t throw the UPS into the trash; batteries contain bad stuff. Home Depot has a recycling box for dead batteries near the entrance to most of their stores and The Shack (née Radio Shack) will also usually recycle them.
