No, you would not need a local phone for every country, it is only cheaper to call overseas home from the country where you bought the phone . When in Austria, we used to slip over the border, usually for lunch somewhere ( we were not that far away,) to then call from Germany, with Switzerland the same. We did make calls to the US in bunches, Belgium ,France, they all are in such a short distance and Germany is in the middle, sort of.

Jailbreaking isn't that hard, my 3GS is on T-mobile....

I really don't want to jailbreak my phone.

Have you called ATT and asked about what they have available for Euro travelers using iPhones?

AT&T's rates for roaming are astronomical: $1.99/minute unless I buy the World Traveler plan, where the price drops to $1.69/minute. As a contrast, Belgium is $1.29/minute no matter what plan, and Spain is $1.29/minute normally and $0.99/minute for World Travelers. Data rates are $0.0195/KB (or $20/MB). These all sound exorbitant to me.

Since my G3 cannot multitask (heck, right now it barely can keep up with one task using iOS 4.0x), having Skype for incoming calls won't work unless (as Rick mentioned) I jailbreak my phone.

Arg. I guess not calling the US from Europe, but having a local phone for calling in Europe might be the right way to go. The only problem is what Marta mentioned: I would then need to get a local phone for every locale.

Makes me want to go back to phone cards and pay phones.
