Ed is right, if you want an iPhone go ahead and buy one.  I have the 3Gs, 
plastic and I carry it inside an "Incase" jacket, which covers all but a small 
hole in the bottom to push it up when you open the velcro top.  I wanted this 
case due to their clip being so strong it never slips off my belt.  I receive 
calls when the phone is inside the case, inside a coat, or downstairs under a 
pile of papers.  

If there is a metal back, and the entire backside becomes the antenna and it 
may get better reception but who knows if or when it will happen.  Look at the 
satisfaction numbers from even the iPhone 4 folks, numbers that NO other phone 
company can come close to.  Give yourself a Christmas gift.
