You can use any drive with a firewire connection as now days there really will
not be a big selection is the standard is being fazed out by Apple.
On file sync another choice for important files is to use Dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/
This gives you a cloud syncing solution that is easy to use right in the
finder. Drop a file in your dropbox folder it is uploaded and then it is synced
with all your other computers that are logged into your dropbox account.

Then what back-up fire wire drive would you recommend for a lap top to use
Super Duper on, and have access to Target Disk Mode????

Another advantage to Firewire drives is Target Disk Mode, which allows you to
migrate your files to a new computer easily if you're not able to use Migration
Assistant for some reason (I was not, and Target Disk Mode saved me).

I forgot about that. The only PPC Mac we have left is the eMac in the kitchen

I know there was a reason I used to pay the premium for firewire even when I
was just using the drive for backup and didn't really "need" the extra speed...

USB will work fine for Super Duper. I use them all the time. Firewire will just
work faster.

Also, older PowerPC Macs can't boot off USB drives.
