If it bothers you, the scrolling direction can be changed in the system preferences. Is there a way to force a sync without quitting ICal? Have you tried iCal>Calendar>Refresh? I don’t know if this works with the iCloud calendar, but it does work with Google calendars. We've switched all our calendaring over to Google calendars.
