Here's an update:

I booted from the apple startup disk and repaired the disk. Part way through
disk utility stopped and said it could not repair the disk. I needed to
reformat the disk and reinstall my operating system.

Next I booted from a Disc Warrior disk and after several minutes I got the
message to restart the disk.

I booted an older version of the disk warrior and again nothing happened and
was told to restart. So I restarted from the Apple startup disk and tried to
repair the disk a second time BUT I got a message that the disk was ok. I
repaired permissions, and booted from the computer's hard drive but the problem
with my program still exists.

UGH!
