My MacBook Pro is behaving very strangely this morning. Specifically, the
trackpad pointer/cursor is "hanging" if I don't move it for about 5 or 6
seconds. That is, after that period of inactivity, if I swipe my finger across
the trackpad to move it, it does not move. If I keep swiping back and forth for
a few seconds, it eventually starts moving and acts normally as long as I keep
using it without pausing for that 5 or 6 seconds. Once I stop using it for that
amount of time, it hangs again. Every time. The I-beam cursor, such as the one
you get in Mail or a word processing program, does the same thing.

It is as if the trackpad (or the cursor) has fallen asleep and needs a few
seconds of shaking to wake up. While typing this message I have discovered that
the keyboard is doing the same thing — if I don't type a keystroke for 5 or 6
seconds, the next letter or space I try to type doesn't appear for several
seconds. The cursor just keeps flashing and then, if I've hit the space bar
five times during the "hang" it proceeds to enter five spaces once it starts
working again.

I will note that I do not get this same behavior if I do a Safe Boot. In that
case, the cursor (and the keyboard, I presume) works as it should.

I have turned off every extension, file sharing setting, iCloud, etc., etc.,
that I can find, but it seems to make no difference.

A possible clue: This morning I got a notification that updates were available
from Apple's App Store; one of which was an update from OS X 10.8.1 to 10.8.2.
After installing this update a window appeared asking me to sign in to iCloud
(which I had been signed into prior to the update). When I entered my Apple ID
to do so, it gave a message that my Apple password was invalid and that I would
have to change it. I clicked on a link in that window to change password and
went to what looked like Apple's change password screen (the URL was
forgot.apple.com). It asked me to enter my Apple ID (my email address) and then
the method of authentication. I chose "Email authentication" and the next
screen said I was to "follow the directions in the email to reset your
password." I never received an email from Apple. My Apple ID and password still
work (or iCloud, iTunes, etc.).

At this point I got (and still am) a little paranoid: Had something harmful
been installed? Was something maybe even logging my keystrokes or somehow
coming in between my keyboard/trackpad and the computer?

I'm still trying different things to see if I can isolate something that's
causing this, but so far without success. Has anybody else experienced anything
strange like this after updating to 10.8.2?

Dan
