Tom, That did the trick, though not in the way one would expect. There was not a disk stuck in the drive, but apparently the mechanism was stuck in the "up" position. I did the restart while holding down the touchpad a couple of times, and I could hear the drive make a "trying to eject" noise each time, but nothing came out. So the next time I tried inserting a disk while doing that same procedure, and when the drive made it's "trying to eject" noise, it accepted the disk I was inserting. I then was able to eject that disk and insert another one by normal process.
I presume what happened is that when it tries to eject during the restart/touchpad procedure it moves the intake/eject mechanism up and down, and once it allowed a disk to be inserted during that movement, it returned things to a normal state.
