Tom, This sounds right, you would want TM turned off during the transfer so data isn’t written to the wrong one.
You would want to drag and drop the past backups to the new machine, then eject the old TM. Then turn TM back on and choose the new device as the one for your Mac to use… That should take care of it. Why it doesn’t show up? I have no idea, maybe when all is done do a restart and see if that helps. I assume they DO show up on your desktop so you can do the dragging of the data from the old to the new?
