Oh, my bad. I guess the few times that I rode with people using Uber they 
didn't tip at all... no cash changed hands. I just assumed that they were 
tipping from inside the app. Bad assumption.

And as for the downgrading of people who do not tip: there have been plenty of 
posts about this online, as well as plenty of posts that drivers don't want to 
ask for tips explicitly for fear of being downgraded, plus posts that people 
should tip Uber drivers, plus other posts that you should not tip Uber drivers.

From all this, it seems that tipping (viewed either as a way of businesses to 
avoid giving real prices or as as way for customers to show appreciation or 
both) is not a clear issue. Drivers would like tips, esp. after Uber cut the 
pay rates. Uber itself takes no side, but only says that tipping is allowed 
(how gracious of them).
