Lee, thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Yes, occasionally I need to [securely] wipe a file or two.  
My system is older and all disks, plus externals, are HDs, 
with no SSDs. (Reluctant to modernize, and broke to boot.)

To regain access to the srm function in Terminal, I had to 
revert to MacOS X El Capitan (ver. 10.11.6) from my system 
backup.  I’ll need to pull out an extra HD to use as a new 
backup for the system update to Sierra.  All I have to do 
is find the stored equipment.   < SIGH >
