Beats me what happened in this case.

For me, this happens from time to time with other applications (esp. those I 
beta test), and in those cases it's because somewhere between starting the 
download of the update and the end of the installation, the process got 
interrupted. For me, it can be something like moving in the house and having 
the wireless connection jumping from the router to the wireless extender or 
shutting the lid on the laptop for too long.
