Did you check the “Deleted files” section on Dropbox? They keep deleted files 
around for at least 30 days.

PS/ I use Dropbox and iCloud folders on my machines and work directly from 
those folders. They are constantly being synced in the background to three 
Macs, and the Dropbox stuff is also being synced to a Linux box. I’ve noticed 
no problems.

A few years ago, iCloud was somewhat unstable, but over the last couple of 
years it has become very reliable. Dropbox is still a little faster to sync. 
I’ve kind of moved all my working documents over to iCloud so I can work on 
them anywhere. I chose to use iCloud instead of Dropbox for my current work 
because I’m paying for extra space on iCloud and not on Dropbox.
