I have had huge problems getting wifi to work in the past on some
computers, which was resolved largely by
ensuring there is only ever one network manager installed.
The other issue is that wicd does not use the /etc/network/interfaces file,
so can work whilst another manager which relies upon it cannot, because
that file is not set up properly.
If you used a wired connection to initially set up and the switched to
wicd to use wifi, you can find that
there is in fact no wlan0 or whatever in the /etc/network/interfaces file
