Although it seems like advertising for the 'opposition', it is
'horses for courses' and in the first instance you would probably be best to use the Linuxcnc DVD based distro installed on an x86 computer. It will give you a complete install 'out of the box' plus a rtai kernel, which is likely to work the best when software stepping on the parallel port and that method is the simplest for someone not conversant with it. If you are at a company, you should have a few computers to try and be able to get one with decent latency to use as the controller. John Thornton on their forum has a conversion script which should give a reasonable config, based upon a Mach 3 xml file. That should get you up and running. If you decide later to build in the controller, then obviously a BBB or similar comes into its own due to its size and Machinekit runs on that, whereas Linuxcnc does not (easily at least). If you later go to a FPGA card, with hardware stepping, encoders etc, then all options are open. regards On 09/07/16 13:24,
