There is also a recent article <http://machinekoder.com/machinekit-and-cura/> Machinekoder put out about how to use Cura instead of Slic3r if you wanted to try that route. Instructions were pretty straight forward, minus the caveats listed below.
I've used both, with similar results. Make sure you do follow the instructions with Cura 2.1 instead of the default download of Cura 2.3. Cura 2.3 has some architecture changes which make this not work for now. If you can't find the file locations he's talking about replace /usr with /opt. That's where mine ended up. The default layer height in Cura seems rather low for anything but 'Low Quality'. Also by default, the 'save to file' will select .gcode instead of .ngc on first save. Make sure you change that.
