In all honesty I've had nothing but a failed attempts at getting newer images to run on the various beaglebones I'm running.
I have to run stand alone, and the 8.5 image so far is the version I've had the fewest problems running with a X environment. I just flashed a newer image and am about to attempt to run on that. But so far even the example configs fail to load from the image.
