I grabbed the stretch image and played with it some today.

It turns out there is no GUI installed.  I checked with Robert Nelson,
and he indicated the image was made at the request of a user who did
not need the GUI (or was using one of the remote user interfaces), so
it isn't included.

You should be able to install one of the desktops via Debian packages,
but that might be more work than you're wanting to tackle.

If you only want to use a remote UI, you can just launch machinekit
and specify the configuration file (so it doesn't try to launch the
configuration picker gui):

  machinekit path/to/your.ini

...or you can just use the Jessie image, which has a desktop already
installed.

I'll try to find enough time over the holidays to get the stretch
image fixed up.  Assistance welcome, grab the source and send pull
requests based on:
