Well, I personally use the Security Zones feature for this, and no, it's not
perfect, but tends to eliminate the vast majority of annoyances. I have a
Restricted Sites zone that is sent to disallow plugins and scripting, and I
list domains with pop-up ads or annoying Shockwave ads (like the HUGE ones
at ZDNet/CNet) in that preference setting. The best part is that once you
put most free webspace providers (Yahoo! Geocities, Terra Lycos' Tripod &
Angelfire, etc.) in this setting, you almost never see their ads again, and
personally, I find free homepages that play cheesy MIDI music on loading to
be annoying, so it stops that too.
