No offense intended if any of the following is too obvious.
1) Check for Object Supportlib; trash it if present. Trash desktop and build a fresh
one. Zap PRAM.
2) Move the whole Preferences folder to the Desktop. Restart. Set up printer. Restart.
If it holds, something is amiss in the prefs folder.
3) Swap out all the network connectors -- try different cables and a different port in
the hub/switch.
4) Try a different printer driver. AdobePS if you're using Laserwriter, or vice-versa.
There's other things, but that's a start.

In my experience, neither have these have ever contributed to helping fix a problem
like this. Never.
