Hi all,

Recently I bought an Iomega Zip 100 at Cash Converters.
It was cheap but came with no power adapter. The specs for
the adapter are 5V 1A (1.7 V Max.) I thought it would be
easy to get an adapter, but soon found out otherwise.

After considerable effort searching through boxes of old
adapters in surplus stores, I bought a new adapter that I
could adjust to 4.5 volts, 1 amp (1 V Max.) After a lot of
input from Quadlist, I realise that those last figures might
be a little rough on an adapter of this type.

Plugging in the Zip drive I see a green light and an
amber flashing light. In the online manual for this drive I
read that this is the normal sort of display for this
equipment.

I downloaded Iomegaware from the web and installed it.
It put version 6.06 of the Iomega driver into the extensions
folder. I hooked everything up just as if the Zip were any
other external drive (that is, I connected it to the SCSI
port and turned it on before turning on the computer, PM
6100, OS 8.6, 40 megs).

I inserted a Mac formatted Zip 100 disk but the icon did
not come up. Tried the whole thing over a couple of times
unsuccessfully and then tried to use the Tools application
and was told that it couldn't be used because the computer
couldn't see a a Zip driver connected.

I then did everything again from scratch and noticed
that the Iomega extension was X'd out at startup. I tried
booting up with only the base setup of extensions but again
the Iomega extension was X'D out.

Three questions: 1) This appears to be an extension
conflict. What do I do about it considering that this is
happening with the base set of extensions? 2) Does the
power adapter's inability to hit a 1.7 V Max bear upon this
problem? 3) When an Iomega drive has undergone that rite of
passage known as the Click of Death, does it truly appear
dead or do its lights blink away as if nothing had happened?
Regards, John.
