If you can, post the IP addresses you are getting. You can also ask your cable provider what range of IP you should get.
Some cable modems give out DHCP addresses when they are not online so that client machines behind them don't get 169.x.x.x addresses and so that you can do diagnostics on the modem (put modem and PC on same network). If you can, grab a tool like Anarchie or something that will let you: A) ping the router as listed in the DHCP control panel B) ping your DNS server as listed in DHCP C) ping your mail server, either by IP address or by mail.host.com type address. You can also do a traceroute from your machine to another well known server like www.lowendmac.net to see where the connection dies if it does die.
