At our company, every mac is required to have the same three digit password.
It's stupid, but it's a management decision that will not be changed (except
for OS X machines, if and when). But we have a recurring problem with the
machines resetting their own passwords to an eight digit password.

Right now, I am setting up a beige G3 300 DT for use as a print server.
Fresh install of OS 9.0 and setting up sharing when it happens. I set the
three digit password, start setting up users and groups, when I return to
the main pane of the File Sharing setup, it shows eight asterisks in the
password field. Each user password field also shows eight asterisks.

I've been through the usual suspects, trashing prefs, etc. I usually have to
keep doing a fresh install until it finally works, but it is a royal pain.

Anyone know what's going on? This has happened with at least six Macs and it
really sucks.

If you have any suggestions, please email me offlist, as I am in digest
mode. If I ever find the answer, I'll post it to the list.

Thanks, todd

P.S., I am sending it to several different mac lists in order to get wider
exposure. Please forgive if you receive multiple copies. (I'm also sending
it to the pickle individually, as the pickle knows all.)
