Hi--
I have just joined this list to ask your advice
(I usually read Quadlist and PCI Macs).
Have a 3-computer network with Cat5 ethernet
cable that seems to work great for printer sharing.
When I copy a file from one computer (with filesharing on)
to another (with filesharing off), though, it seems to go
really slowly. For example, a 31-Mb file took nearly an hour.
Does it seem like something is wrong? Any advice
is appreciated.
Here are more details if this will help:
All three computers have OS 8.6 with the same versions
of AppleTalk and OT 2.0.3. They are connected to a
Farallon 8-port hub along with a laser printer.
1) Backup computer, 7300/180--Appletalk connect via Ethernet
TCP via ethernet, mannually config, TCP/IP Active,
always on (load only when needed is UNchecked).
2) Main computer, 7600/Sonnet G3, Appletalk connect via ethernet
TCP via PPP (because modem dialup needed, rural location, Grrrr!)
config "using PPP server"
TCP active, Load only when needed is checked on.
3) 2ndary computer, 7300/G3, same setup as Main computer above.
(this computer has its own modem, different phone line)
Now I realize that filecopying/sharing is faster with
TCP/IP instead of Appletalk, but my dilemma is that I have
to have PPP for the dialup modems until better technology comes
along, and I can't be switching settings back and forth all
the time. (Am I right that neither a hardware nor software
router would solve this dilemma, ie, still need to dial out
separately?)
I have Retrospect Backup installed on my backup computer,
and it works fine. But again, it's very slow with AppleTalk
clients (even with filesharing off on all machines).
I have tried switching everything to TCP/ethernet
and switching Retrospect's two clients to TCP, and it works great,
very zippy! This makes me think that my hardware is okay.
Sorry this is so long--I am inexperienced with network
concepts and am not sure exactly what is relevant. Thanks!
