Thanks to those who have responded. I would use IPNetrouter except
that I don't have a suitable mac, my old ones are really old (pre PPC).

If I recall there is a version of IPNetrouter that will work on a 68030 and above. Routing is not a processor intensive task on most home networks.

The advantage of a software router is that the software has more options. A disadvantage is that another machine must be maintained on the network.

For the Airport base station, do you know if the RF (ie, wireless) part
can be turned off if not wanted?

Yes you can. The advantage of an Airport is the built-in V.90 modem. You
must add a hub or switch to add ports.

The advantages of an Asante router is that a more modern V.92 modem can be
added externally and more ports (4 or 8) are built-in.

Thanks,

Bob

Hope that gives you some options,

I have an Asante FR3004FLC 4-port 10/100 with both support for broadband and dialup, as well as a parallel printer port. I can highly recommend this model. From their website, it appears they no longer offer a router for dial-up, though I've queried them to see if I missed something. I'll post an update if they indicate they still have products with this. Otherwise, eBay is probably your best bet. Good luck.
