DDR memory prices rise
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 9th 2002

As Apple prepares to launch a refreshed pro desktop line, the cost of RAM heads north

An unattributed story at Computex Online reports that the price of the DDR RAM has
risen from $5.80 to $6.60 (15 percent) for 256Mbit and $2.80 to $3.20 (9 percent) for
128Mbit. According to unnamed sources, Intel''s revamped product line, notably its
845E and 845G motherboard chipsets, which require DDR RAM, and the back-to-school
purchasing season in China may be behind the surge in demand for DDR memory.

PC replacement demand could be another factor since, on average, a PC is replaced in
about every three years, the report claims. This line of reasoning states that the
last major upgrade cycle -- 1999 when Y2K fears spawned heavy buying -- took place
over three years ago and that many users and businesses in China are over due for an
upgrade.

Analysis: I wonder if Apple will push up prices for the new PowerMacs on this
justification only to offer it back to us in the form of a mail-in rebate that two out
of three buyers will "fail" to cash in on?
