More PowerBook G4 Upgrades for Wallstreet, Lombard
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
July 15th 2002

More G4 choices for PowerBook G3 owner-drivers.

Rejuvenated Newer Technology has announced its NUPower G4 CPU upgrade for the 1998 and
1999 PowerBook G3 models (Wallstreet and Lombard).

Equipped with a 500MHz G4, the $350 upgrade comprises a newly-mounted CPU on the
existing daughtercard. PowerBooks need to be shipped to Newer for the operation, which
is done via 2-day UPS shipping.

Newer has adopted a slightly unusual approach to its G4 upgrades, stating that the L2
(''backside'') cache of the original PowerBook CPU is retained (for example, a
233MHz/512K Wallstreet would have only its 512K cache, instead of the 1MB commonly
found in G4s. However, Newer offers a 1MB cache @ 250MHz option for the cacheless
Wallstreet 233 (additional cost).

It is not clear whether the 512K Lombard 333MHz retains its original cache with the G4
upgrade.

For more information, you can contact NewerTech at 7777 E. Osie, Suite 304B, Wichita,
Kansas 67207, or visit their website. [site not updated].

Analysis: Given the Pismo G4''s startling performance for a mere $299 (check out
Rob-Art Morgan''s tests at Bare Feats) it''s probably safe to assume that the
Wallstreet and Lombard will get a respectable performance boost from this upgrade. The
Lombard in particular makes this a tempting upgrade, as you can now kludge the ATI
Rage Pro driver support in OS X (although not for Wallstreet). Nevertheless, either of
these ''Books will be lightning-fast enough in OS 9 for some real DV work - and will
finally support hitherto unusable apps like iDVD and DVD Studio Pro. It''ll also make
working in Photoshop and iMovie a lot less like work.

Newer has taken an alternative path to its rival, PowerLogix. PowerLogix also offers
Wallstreet/Lombard G4 cards, but supplies them on complete CPU daughtercards. Thus, if
something goes wrong, at least you can reinstall your original daughtercard (and have
it to sell as well). Both Newer and PowerLogix solder the Pismo G4 upgrade however.

We really have to put these G4 upgrades in the ring together and test how they compare
in the real world.
