Apple to offer families a break

The company is expected to announce a five-license for $199 deal next week that allows
''honest people to remain honest''
News.com''s Ian Fried quotes Ken Bereskin, marketing director, Mac OS X, as saying
that Apple will announced a "family plan" for licensing OS X and is targetted at
households that have two to five Macs.
The plan, whose introduction will coincide with next week''s release of Jaguar, will
allow consumers to buy a single copy of the operating system and install it on up to
five Macs in a single household for $199.
"We''ve been getting feedback over the last while that more and more families are
adding second and third Macs," Bereskin told News.com.
However, Bereskin also said the family licensing program had been in the works for
some time and was not the result of recent customer complaints vis-a-vis the lack of
upgrade pricing for Jaguar.
''We''re not Microsoft''
"Our software has never had draconian activation," Bereskin told News.com. "This is a
great way to allow honest people to remain honest."
Unlike M$, Apple has yet to include nasty roadblocks to making multiple installations
from a single installer CD. Apple''s to-be-announced family plan apparently signals
the company doesn''t intend to implement activation or other hurdles in its software
any time soon.
Analysis: Hurray! This plan''s pricing and marketing seem to this user to be very well
balanced. Finally, there''s a piece of Jaguar news that won''t piss half of us off.
