Apple open sourcing Rendezvous
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
August 29th 2002
With a technological lead and shipping product in hand, Cupertino is likely making an
end run on the standards-setting process
Apple has announced that it will release Rendezvous, a set of software tools and
protocols that allows users to see and connect to other users and devices on a TCP/IP
network. Steve Jobs demo''d the technology as part of his Jaguar presentation at
Macworld NY in July to raves from the audience.
"If you don''t have it proliferate, it''s the sound of one hand clapping," Brian
Croll, senior director, worldwide product (software) marketing, Apple, told News.com.
Apple will release the core technology behind Rendezvous, as well as its the code for
its implementation in X.2, according to News.com. Further, the company will also offer
assistance to developers working to develop drivers, devices and applications designed
to take advantage of this burgeoning would-be network standard.
"I think this is probably the No. 1 new technology that we are out there evangelizing
for the developer community," Croll said.
HP and Lexmark have already said they will make future printers Rendezvous compatible.
One reader at Slashdot states that "it''s probably safe to assume" Rendezvous will be
released under the Apple Public Source License.
Analysis: Open source is a two-edged blade. Yes, it is a marketing coup for Apple and
a potential boon as there are thousands of open source developers. However,
third-party developers of proprietary devices and software (i.e. almost everything you
see in stores) often look askance at open source because it is public.
It is worth noting that Apple''s release of Rendezvous is likely an end-run on the
contentious standards-setting process, which can involve dozens of competing companies
and technologies that can take years. If Apple can entice developers into including
Rendezvous in a ubiquitous number of devices and software, it will have established a
de facto standard that can be rubber-stamped later by the gatekeepers.
