Record Audio Direct into X with Audio X
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 3rd 2002

More audio apps come to OS X.

RealMacs has released version 2.0 of its Audio X utility, which lets you record from
any input source on your Mac.

USB mikes, FireWire video cameras, build-in microphone or line-in from a stereo or VCR
are supported audio sources, Audio X records AIFF files, which can then convert to
MP3, if desired, using iTunes. Or MPEG-4 using QuickTime 6.0.

Audio X can be used for putting your vinyl records onto disk or CDR. You can also use
it for recording interviews, or copying tapes.

Version 2.0 has been updated to run on OS X 10.2, and requires 10.1 or later. Auido X
is shareware and costs $15 to register. It is available as a fully-functional download
(1.4MB).

Analysis: The other main player in this OS X shareware market is Felt Tip''s Sound
Studio, a waveform AIFF recorder. Upmarket, costing a lot more, is Bias'' Peak (Peak
LE comes with Final Cut Pro). Audio X isn''t a music editor, but for those who don''t
need the two-track editing capability of Peak, Audio X is a cheap way of getting your
sound into X.
