Font Reserve 3.1 extends X
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 5th 2002

The update brings Jaguar, OpenType and automatic font activation support

DiamondSoft has announced the immediate availability of Font Reserve Single User 3.1,
featuring the first and only method for system-wide automatic font activation under X.
This major update to the award-winning application also provides Jaguar support,
support for all the latest font formats, precision auto-activation for the most
popular publishing programs and a completely automated method for managing system
fonts.

"Jaguar enabled system-wide automatic font activation on the Macintosh, so we
responded immediately with an update of Font Reserve that supports it," said Brian
Berson, president and founder, DiamondSoft. "Now, for the first time, all Font Reserve
users need to do is open documents and the fonts are activated automatically-for most
Mac OS X applications."

Font Reserve 3.1 takes automatic font activation a step further for professional
publishing environments, where it matters precisely which version of a font is used.
Font Reserve plug-ins for Adobe InDesign 2, Adobe Illustrator 10 and QuarkXPress 5
employ DiamondSoft''s proprietary Font Sense technology to provide absolute font
identification, preventing any costly output issues that may arise with using
incorrect fonts. Font Reserve is the only font manager to provide this feature for
Adobe InDesign.

In addition to ongoing support for all popular PostScript and TrueType Macintosh
fonts, version 3.1 adds support for OpenType, the joint Adobe and Microsoft
cross-platform font standard, along with support for Windows TrueType, double-byte and
Apple''s dFont fonts. This version continues to support PostScript Multiple Master
fonts which are now supported by X.2. The expanded support ensures that users can
manage all their fonts exclusively with Font Reserve.

Version 3.1 also enhances the System Font Handler, providing a completely automated,
foolproof method for moving all nonessential fonts out of Mac OS X''s many System
Fonts folders and into Font Reserve. By managing all their fonts with Font Reserve,
users know exactly what fonts they have and which ones are active at all times-and
they avoid potential conflicts.

Prices, availability

Font Reserve 3.1, available for X and Classic, carries an SRP of $89.95 for the
download version and $99.95 for the retail packaged version. DiamondSoft is offering a
competitive upgrade from Suitcase or ATM Deluxe for $49.95. Registered users who have
purchased Font Reserve Single User 3.0 for Macintosh are eligible for a free upgrade
to version 3.1. Earlier versions can be upgraded to version 3.1 for $29.95 for an
electronic download version and US $39.95 for the CD package version.

Analysis: Pre-Jaguar, X had been widely criticized for its poor font management
capabilities. Now with X.2 and much improved native font management available it may
take vendors some time to create tools and applications that take full advantage of
the advances at their disposal. This is perhaps the first salvo in that effort.
