Karelia ships X.2-compatible Watson
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

This dot-update offers direct Google and Amazon searches

Karelia Software has announced the release of Watson 1.5.5, a maintenance upgrade to
its pioneering desktop interface to the most popular Web content and services. v1.5.5
brings improved compatibility with X.2 and adds a plug-in that uses the popular Google
Web search engine.

Watson, winner of the 2002 Apple Design Award for "Most Innovative Mac OS X Product,"
was originally designed to retrieve information from Web services and to complement
Apple''s search utility, Sherlock 2. Karelia developed a faster, better web search
tool when Apple moved into the Web services arena that Watson had pioneered.

"We were disappointed, and had to cut back, when Apple announced Sherlock 3 and it
looked like a Watson clone," said Dan Wood, president, Karelia and Watson''s creator.
"Soon we discovered that Watson is much faster than Sherlock 3 and boasts far more
tools. We are still offering the Macintosh community a faster, more feature-rich
alternative to Apple''s best efforts. Our team has been hard at work to keep Watson
ahead of the pack."

Watson''s new Internet search plug-in connects to Google, the best and most popular
search site on the Web. In contrast, Sherlock 3 only connects to "uninspiring" search
sites. The update also includes a new time-saving plug-in to browse and search
Amazon.com.

Watson 1.5.5 is downloadable as a fully functional, expiring demo. A single-user
license costs $29 and a "household" license costs $39. Watson requires Mac OS X 10.1
or higher.

Analysis: Though many users won''t buy Watson because of Sherlock 3, it''s likely that
power users will prefer the speed and craftsmanship of Wood''s first and still best
Internet search tool. As is often the case, third-party developers produce better
products.

The addition of the "household" license for just $10 more is a nice touch.
