Motorola posts profit, exceeds forecast
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

Apple's long-time CPU partner has ended its money-losing streak, but its role going
forward for the platform is uncertain

Inforworld reports that Motorola has posted a net profit, ending six straight quarters
of losses, helped by gains in its mobile phone unit and a lower restructuring charge.

Motorola reported a Q3 profit of $111 million, or $0.03 a share, compared with a net
loss in the year-ago quarter of $1.4 billion, or $0.63 a share. The company predicted
in July that it expected to achieve a profit for this first time in nearly two years.

Motorola shares fell to $9.95 in after-hours trading, after closing at $10.10 on the
New York exchange. Excluding one-time items, it reported an operating profit of 6
cents per share, beating its forecast of 5 cents a share.

Of relevance to Mac users, Moto's semiconductor business broke back into positive
territory, posting a $13 million net profit, compared with a $418 million loss last
year. Sales rose 13 percent from last year to $1.2 billion.

Editor's note: The grapevine has been rife with rumors that Moto will quit CPU
business. It is rumored that Apple's long-time CPU partner is in negotiations with
Hitachi to sell off part or all of its semiconductor business.

Do you think Apple will still be using Moto CPUs by this time next year?
