An Apple a Day: Jaguar Free for Teachers
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 17th 2002

Promo to push OS X.2 into the classroom.

Apple has announced that it will give a free copy of Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) to K-12
teachers, according to a story at MacCentral.

The 'X for Teachers' program will be valid until December 31, 2002. K-12 teachers who
qualify for a copy of X.2 also receive OS X training and Classic support CDs. Apple
will reportedly handle all costs related to postage and handling.

Analysis: It's not clear who or what qualifies for this program: you obviously need a
G3 or better. This initiative is clearly to get teachers to move their Macs - and
maybe those of their students - to OS X. But what about teachers who haven't jumped to
a new Mac for some time? (either because their school budget or their personal budget
doesn't allow for it).

Educational discounts are all well and good, but not worth a lot these days on new
Macs. Special deals for educators on eMacs and iBooks might just stem some of the
schools' shift to the Dark Side. Apple might have to burn some cash to achieve this,
but losing more Ed market share - and I'm talking new sales here, not installed base -
to Dell is, in the long run, a real threat to one of Apple's core markets.
