Microsoft posts Office security update
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
October 17th 2002
Office v.X 10.1.1 fixes a number of security issues in the OS X Office suite.
Microsoft Wednesday released Office v. X 10.1.1 security update. Also listed are
unspecified stability improvements when running Mac OS X 10.2. The release updates
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage for English installations. Other languages will
be supported with a future release. Microsoft notes that users must install Service
Release 1 prior to installing the 10.1.1 update.
As described by Microsoft:
"This update addresses a security vulnerability that can enable an attacker who had a
valid security certificate to issue an invalid subordinate certificate that would
appear to be valid. This update also addresses a vulnerability in Word's field codes
that could allow an attacker to maliciously use field codes and external updates to
steal information from your computer without your knowledge. For more information
about this these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Security Bulletins MS02-050 and
MS02-059."
The 10.1.1 update is free to current Office v.X customers and can be downloaded from
Microsoft.
