ATI releases new X, Classic drivers
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 17th 2002
The company has also updated X troubleshooting notes, and explained some of the
ins-n-outs of missing features under Apple's BSD-based operating sytem
ATI has posted updated drivers for cards sold through retail, as well as "most ATI
graphics built into many Macintosh models." However, TV-tuner functionality is still
not supported under X. Also, no mention of this feature is made in the update's "Read
Me" file.
The has listed steps to take if you're affected by the X.2 kernel panic on G4s with
more than 1GB of RAM and a RADEON PCI with third-party AGP card installed (say that
will a mouthful of saltines). Though this known issue isn't remedied by this latest
updated, the company does offer some temporary work-around advice:
Remove some of your system memory, bringing the total down to 1GB or less.
Replace the third-party AGPcard with one that does not exhibit this problem (RADEON
8500, RADEONAGP).
 Remove your RADEONPCI card.
Run Mac OS X 10.1.5 instead of 10.2 Jaguar.
Under Mac OS 9.x (version 9.2.1 and higher) the October 16 update supports the
following products:
 Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
 Radeon 7000 Mac Edition
 Radeon Mac Edition
Rage 128 Mac products such as
 Rage Orion
 Nexus 128
 XClaim VR 128
 XClaim VR (Rage II/PRO)
 XClaim 3D Plus
 Nexus GA
 XClaim 3D (Rage II/PRO)
 XClaim GA
Under Mac OS X (version 10.1.3 to 10.2.1) the following products are supported:
 Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
 Radeon 7000 Mac Edition
 Radeon Mac Edition
Rage 128 Mac products such as
 Rage Orion
 Nexus 128
 XClaim VR 128
Editor's note: Once again, it's highly disappointing that TV functionality isn't
support under X or that the company hasn't provided any info on when or if such will
be provided. Even a new product to replace older cards would be welcome in comparison
to what amounts to a "feature black out" by the long-time Mac graphics solution
provider.
