Apple snubs IDG, will not exhibit at Macworld Boston/2004, will 're-evaluate' NYC 2003
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac

Apple Computer dropped a bomb Thursday when it stated it will not be attending
Macworld Expo when it moves back to Boston

Apple has stated that it has decided to sit out Macworld Expo Boston in 2004. IDG
World Expos announced earlier today that it will be moving its east coast show from
New York back to Boston in 2004. Apple also said it will re-evaluate its participation
in the 2003 east cost show, which will be in New York. Apple did state that it plans
to attend the annual west coast show in San Francisco.

Apple is quoted in a statement, "Since IDG is no longer investing in New York, we now
need to reevaluate our participation in Macworld New York 2003. Apple will continue to
participate in Macworld San Francisco in January."

Rumors of moving the east coast show back to Boston started as early as the first New
York show, which was considered lackluster. Future shows, however, proved more
successful. The move from Boston was the result of inadequate facilities. By the
summer of 2004, new facilities are expected to be completed. Since the show left
Boston, the city has been lobbying hard for the shows return.

Analysis:

I've heard numerous times Apple, and likely His Steveness himself, prefers New York.
While Boston holds sentimental value among many long-time show-goers, I must agree
that New York is an ideal venue for Apple and other exhibitors. Many of Apple's core
customers are based or located in New York, and the city is also the hub for national
news coverage. While more expensive and inconvenient, New York also hold much more
attractions for those looking to more than just the convention center.

Frankly this won't be a show without Apple, and I wouldn't be surprised if, depending
on what papers have been signed, IDG backs down. If both sides stick to their guns, my
feeling is that by 2006, if not 2005 we'll only have the San Francisco expo.
