Microsoft Preps Code for .Net: Mac
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 8th 2002

Early development stages, but OS X is part of .Net's grand plan.

Microsoft is readying code for the Mac version of .Net, according to a story at
MacWorld UK.

The article says that MS has added OS X code support to its Common Language
Infrastructure (CLI). The company uses 'Rotor', which comprises CLI source code
designed to assist developers writing in MS languages. However, Rotor is
not-for-profit and can be used for commercial purposes.

The story notes that Shared Source CLI has the source code to run on Windows XP, Free
BSD and OS X. The kit also contains compilers, sample code and documentation. It also
features the 'Platform Layer', which allows developers to port applications over from
Windows XP to Unix (FreeBSD and OS X, in this case).

Analysis: MacWorld UK speculates that MS views Macs as potential .Net clients at a
minimum. We wonder whether MS is more ambitous than that [not too great a
supposition]. There would certainly be a market for targeting education with .Net
collaboration tools, particularly if MS can make the same feature set available for
Mac and Windows. Schools subscribing to .Net? Big market = big incentive.

After all, MS don't have to worry about being accused of monopolistic practises -
except in Europe, of course. But that's another story.
